Gerald Robertson, 59, has been identified as the person involved in the fatal crash that was set off by a tree that landed on a Range Rover that was traveling through Chesapeake Beach on Wednesday night.
Shortly before 7 p.m. on Feb. 7, members of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office were called to the intersection of Route 261 (Bayside Road) and 13th Street in Chesapeake Beach to investigate a reported crash that left two with serious injuries.
According to investigators, Robertson was driving the Range Rover north on Route 261, and as he and a female passenger approached the intersection, a tree fell towards the roadway.
The truck struck the tree as it was falling.
Investigators say that the tree impacted the vehicle as it intruded into the passenger compartment of the vehicle, which then struck a guardrail and continued of the road and struck a second tree.
The Chesapeake Beach resident was rushed by paramedics to CalvertHealth, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. An unidentified woman was also taken to a local trauma center in critical condition.
Her condition was not available on Thursday morning.
Master Deputy Jeffrey Hardesty of the sheriff's office's Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.
Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the fatal incident has been asked to contact Hardesty by calling (410) 535-2800 or emailing Jeffrey.Hardesty@calvertcountymd.gov.
